After our crazy picture session or whatever you want to call it, we calmed down and started really exploring the salt flat. We drove to a section where veins and channels of water rise up from under the salt flats and reach the surface. There our guides showed us that if you reach into the cold water you can break off perfectly cubic salt crystals that hang underneath.

Within the Salar de Uyuni, there are 14 islands of rock that portrude out of the salt plain. We stopped to visit one called the Island Incahuas. For an unexpected 20 bolivianos you can hike up and around this island where giant cactus tower over 14 feet high all over the rock island. Plus you get a great view of the Salar.
